New garage door cost, line by line
A new garage door cost is four numbers added together: the door itself, the hardware that hangs it, the labor to install it and the removal of the old one. Size and material move the first number most. This page shows national ranges for each, where they come from, and what makes a real price come out higher or lower.

National averages hide a wide spread. A plain uninsulated steel door for one car and a custom wood carriage-house door for two cars are both a new garage door, and one can cost ten times the other. The tables below are there to show which choices matter, not to price your door.

Two single doors usually cost more than one double door of the same total width, because each carries its own springs, tracks and opener. The reverse also holds: a double door is one heavy door, and its springs and opener have to match that weight.

Insulated garage door against uninsulated
Fixr’s installed ranges are $400 to $1,800 for an uninsulated door and $700 to $2,300 for an insulated one. The insulated door is built as a sandwich, steel skin, foam core, steel skin, and the extra layers make it stiffer and quieter as well as warmer.
Insulation is advertised as an R-value. The industry method behind most of those numbers, DASMA Technical Data Sheet 163, calculates R-value through the middle of one section and leaves out the joints between sections and the perimeter. A tested U-factor for the whole door, measured under ANSI/DASMA 105, describes the installed door more realistically where a maker publishes one.
What pushes a new garage door cost up or down
- Windows and decorative hardware. Window rows, strap hinges and handles add to the door price and sometimes to its weight.
- Wind rating. In coastal wind zones the door must carry a rating, and reinforced doors cost more.
- Opener. Fixr puts an installed opener at $300 to $600; keeping a compatible opener saves that line.
- Framing surprises. Rotten jambs or header wood are found when the old door comes off and are priced as extra work.
- Headroom. A low ceiling may need a low-headroom track kit.
At the far end of the scale, Zonda’s Cost vs. Value report for 2025 priced its garage door replacement project at $4,672 on average, and estimated that it added $12,507 at resale. That is one specified project in a remodeling survey, not a typical invoice, which is why it sits well above the cost-guide ranges. Reading a written price
Two offers for the same opening are only comparable line by line. Check that both name the same door model, size, insulation and window row; that both include new springs sized to that door, tracks, cables, rollers and the bottom seal; that removal and disposal are either in both or in neither; and that opener work is described the same way. A price that is lower because it quietly keeps the old springs or tracks is not a lower price for the same job. Ask what warranty covers the door, the springs and the labor, and for how long each.

Why do two sources give such different numbers for a new door?
They measure different things. Cost guides such as Fixr report national ranges for a typical installed door, most of them plain steel. Zonda’s Cost vs. Value report prices one specific remodeling project with its own specification. Neither is your price; both show the scale.
Can a company give me the exact new garage door cost by phone?
Not a reliable one. The price depends on the measured opening, headroom, the door chosen and what the old hardware and framing look like. The companies on this line measure first and put the price in writing.
Does an insulated garage door cost much more?
